Millennials are killing industries but the Fed says its not their fault

Millennials are killing industries but the Fed says its not their faultMillennials are killing industries but the Fed says its not their faultMillennials have been blamed for killing plenty of industries. But according to a Federal Reserve study, its not their fault.Millennials, long presumed to have less interest in the nonstop consumption of goods that underpins the American economy, might not be that different after all, a new study from the Federal Reserve says, Bloombergs Luke Kawa and Jeremy Herron reported on Thursday. They added Their spending habits are a lot like the generations that came before them, they just have less money at this point in their lives, the Fed study found. The group born between 1981 and 1997 has abfallen behind because many of them came of age during the financial crisis.Differences in spending between millennials and past generations, the Fed study says, are not primarily due to unique tastes and preferences. Instead, its authors, Christopher Kurz, G eng Li, and Daniel J. Vine, point to general technological changes, ongoing demographic evolution, and economic cycles. Most significantly, most millennials came of age during the Great Recession, kneecapping their financial well-being in their early years of adulthood.Read more Psychologically scarred millennials are killing dozens of industries - and its their parents faultMillennials are less well off than members of earlier generations when they were young, with lower earnings, fewer assets, and less wealth, the study said, adding, Conditional on their age and other factors, millennials do not appear to have preferences for consumption that differ significantly from those of earlier generations.Average real labor earnings for male household heads working full time were 18% and 27% higher for Gen Xers and baby boomers when they were young compared with millennials, the study found. For young women, the difference was smaller - 12% for Gen Xers and 24% for boomers - but earlier generations were still making more money when they were younger among similar demographics. Will millennials murder spree continue?Sad millennial festivalIt remains to be seen whether economic recovery will change millennials spending habits. Tabatha Fireman/Stringer/GettyMillennials having less money to spend has put pressure on various industries. Theyre forced to be choosier about what they buy, and certain purchases remain out of reach for many.It remains to be seen whether economic recovery will eventually correct these imbalances. The authors of the Fed study said they found little evidence that millennial households have tastes and preference for consumption that are lower than those of earlier generations. For example, millennials have started spending similar amounts of money on cars as earlier generations now that they arent as heavily burdened by the recession. However, other experts have argued that the psychological effects of the Great Recession might linger.I think we ha ve got a very significant psychological scar from this great recession, Kimberly Greenberger, a Morgan Stanley analyst, told Business Insider in 2017.One in every five households at the time were severely negatively impacted by that event, Greenberger continued. And if you think about the children in that house and how the length and depth of that recession really impacted people, I think you have an entire generation with permanently changed spending habits. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

A New Advertising Sales Resume to Sell a New Medium

A New Advertising Sales Resume to Sell a New MediumA New Advertising Sales Resume to Sell a New MediumJessica Coates is a pioneer in the new world of digital-monitor advertising. But herbeibei old resume welchesnt selling her career properly.Sometimes all you need is an update to get your career going in a new direction.Thats what happened to sales executive Jessica Coates.Coates, who grew up in Westchester County north of Manhattan, had been selling digital-display advertising the kind of multimedia advertising you would find in the bustling brightness of Times Square.Have you ever seen the huge NASDAQ rolling ticker display showing stock prices, market news and advertising in the heart of New Yorks theater district? Coates sold the advertising for that display and many other types of digital-display advertising. But at the end of 2008, she felt like she was ready for a change, and so was her outdated resume. My resume was getting redundant, Coates said. I needed a new way of expres sing, I sold advertising to display advertisers. Coates challenge Her resume spanned a career that started in 1994 placing ads in print publications, evolved into television and finally to digital-display advertising. Hiring managers saw an experienced, all-purpose advertising sales executive instead of an experienced digital-display advertising sales executive who had been in the medium since its founding nearly a decade ago and had no intention of leaving. There are 102 digital-display networks out there now, Coates said. So it was important to me that I showed how I was part of the emerging technologies, how I learned many aspects of marketing and advertising, and how I moved into sales positions and had career ascension in every job I worked.I wanted to make sure I was showing that I have been in the digital-display market since 2001, which is kind of a big deal since it was back in the inception of the industry.Coates resume bucks the trend at two-and-a-half pages that highlight the most important advances in her career. That outcome was getting recognized by a lot of recruiters, hiring managers and a crop of interviews interviews that eventually landed her a new job in digital-display advertising.Coates began her career on the agency side of the ad world in 1994 in Atlanta. She placed clients in local print advertising but quickly advanced her career in the coming years.I grew with one companys business by placing them in magazines and newspapers, then moved on to promoting them on cable. They took off, and since they were in the 18-to-35 demo, the brand really had some legs, Coates said. As the business grew, we got in more closely with product integration with the likes of E, Style and Vogue. My career and role expanded as the marketing and business did. After going as far as she felt could go in Atlanta, Coates moved back to New York. Coates had learned so much about the television side of advertising that she became a sales planner for Fox Broadcasting Companys FX network in 1998.Once again, I felt like I wanted to broaden my experience, so after being a part of things like selling advertising for the finale of Ally McBeal and South Park, I had gained a lot of experience I could take with me almost anywhere, Coates said.Coates has always been at the forefront of selling new technologies as they arise, including digital radio before the likes of Napster and iTunes. She worked with Click Radio, a now-defunct Internet enterprise that imploded with the technology bubble in the early 2000s. This experience led Coates to the digital-display advertising market.Over the course of six years, she moved from account executive all the way to a vice presidency, with positions at CBS Outdoor, Xtronx, Reactrix Systems and OnSpot. In 1998, I decided I had learned enough of sales and had been doing a lot of the salespeoples actual work that it was the right time to move from planning and buying to actually selling, Coates said.Eventually, Coates m oved from TV to display advertising in Times Square to selling advertising for digital networks in malls across the country. As display advertising has evolved, so has Coates. In 2008 she decided it was time her resume did as well.Writing was not her strongest suit, so Coates decided fixing here resume was beyond her abilities. In December, she sought out a professional resume writer who works with Ladders. Why not turn to professionals who know what tense to use as well when to use periods and what are the appropriate words to capitalize? she said. The resume writer questioned Coates about her experiences and career goals to establish a message for the resume that would land her the job she wanted. The writer returned a resume two weeks later that captured the breadth of Coates career and her many promotions but used language and keywords that made it clear she was ingrained in the world of digital-display advertising and would be noticed by recruiters and hiring managers seeking suc h a professional.I got a lot of response in January once my resume was rewritten, Coates said.Coates posted her new resume optimized for digital-display advertising sales positions on SalesLadder in January and landed a job in March.I was pretty impressed with how they took my info and updated it with all the buzzwords and keywords that hiring managers are looking for, Coates said. Also, they updated the resume to a more current style, layout and format. I had to do some digging for some of the info for the questionnaire, but it was well worth the trouble, considering the outcome.

How to Decide if You Should Take a Counteroffer

How to Decide if You Should Take a CounterofferHow to Decide if You Should Take a CounterofferYou agonize. You think about the impacts on your family, coworkers, and yourself. You sway one way, then the other. Finally, you make up your mind toresign from your present job and accept the job offer from a new company with more pay and growth potential. On Friday morning, you get up the nerve. You give your two weeks notice by handing your letter of resignation to your boss. You feel relieved because you think the hard part is over. The excitement of starting a new job begins to replace the anxiety of quitting your present job. But that same afternoon, your boss throws a wrench in the works by making what appears to be an attractive counteroffer. Even your VP, whom you hardly ever see otherwise, asks you to reconsider. Youre flattered but confused. Its tempting to stay with what you know. Should you stay or should you go? Reasons for Accepting Counteroffers Most people find counterof fers hard to reject out of hand because they begin to question whether its worth giving up the familiarity and security of a job theyve had for years. After all, what if you take the new job and realize you hate your coworkers? Or maybe its further away and will add time to your morning commute. And at your current job, youve settled in youre comfortable in your role and know the lay of the land. Plus, if your bosses are making a counteroffer, that means they value you as an employee, right? They recognize your worth and want to keep you on. At a new company, youd have to prove yourself all over again. The Drawbacks of Counteroffers But dont make up your mind just yet theres another side to consider. Even though theyve sweetened the deal, keep in mind that the company is likely making a counteroffer much more for their benefit than yours. Why else would they wait until you resigned to offer you what youre really worth to them? In addition, once youve made it clear that you want to jump ship, your loyalty will be in question. They might be making a counteroffer only to take advantage of you until they find a cheaper or more dedicated replacement. Lastly, youve already been through the decision process. If youve weighed your options and concluded that the new company is a better fit, dont second-guess yourself now. Chances are that down the road, youll wonder how your life would have been different had you accepted, and youll regret choosing the comfortable route instead of taking the risk. For these reasons, most career advisors agree that its not a good idea to accept a counteroffer. How to Discourage or Decline Counteroffers To avoid encouraging a counteroffer, be careful what you say about why youre resigning. For example, avoid saying something like Im resigning because I need more money. If pushed, offer a simple, general reason instead, such as Its a career opportunity I cant reisepass up. Of course, if an offer is made, its important to use tact and finesse when declining, to avoid leaving bad feelings that might damage your references. However, avoid expressing resignation regret, as that might give your employer ammunition to pressure you to stay. Conclusion You know your work situation better than anyone, so ultimately, its up to you. But before jumping to accept a counteroffer, think long and hard about what you really want. Would you really have bothered job searching and going through the interview process if you were happy where you are? Probably not. Best advice take the job where theres room to grow and where theyll pay you what youre worth from the get-go.

What You Need to Know About Fertility Benefits at Work - The Muse

What You Need to Know About Fertility Benefits at Work - The MuseWhat You Need to Know About Fertility Benefits at Work Once upon a time, catered lunches, unlimited vacation, or swank on-site fitness centers were the fruchtwein alluring carrots employers could dangle in order to attract top talent. Today aelendher employer benefit has joined the ranks of the most-coveted work perks generous fertility coverage. The use of assisted reproductive technology (or ART, a blanket term that covers in vitro fertilization, the use of donor eggs to conceive, and gestational surrogacy) doubled between 2007 and 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Approximately 11.9% of women have received any infertility services- which includes non-ART treatments, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) and drug therapy- in their lifetimes. bedrngnis to mention, 63% of LGBTQ people planning families expect to use ART, foster care, or advorkaufsrecht to become parents. Considering th at fertility interventions often total tens of thousands of dollars, its elend difficult to see the appeal of an employer whos willing to help foot the bill.Every person, couple, and family has different needs when it comes to fertility treatments- theyre never one-size-fits-all. And what your employer may cover can vary just as widely as the procedures themselves, only adding to the stress of family-building. Lets demystify these benefits so that you can take full advantage of yours- or advocate for yourself in the event that theyre lacking. Here are seven questions you might be asking yourself How Common Are Fertility Benefits? What Types of Fertility Benefits Might Be Available to Me?Are There Laws Mandating Fertility Coverage? What Are the Limitations of Fertility Benefits? How Can I Advocate for (Better) Fertility Benefits? What Are My Options if I Dont Have Any or Enough Fertility Benefits? What Questions Should I Ask About Fertility Benefits?1. How Common Are Fertility Benefits?Fe rtility benefits have a way to go before theyre as standard as a 401(k), but theyre on the rise. Theres a greater awareness and mora acknowledgement and interest in providing more inclusive benefits, says Julie Stich, associate vice president of content at the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (IFEBP). Employers are seeing that fertility treatments are a relatively low-cost benefit that employees value.According to a 2018 survey by IFEBP, 31% of employers with 500 or more employees offer some kind of fertility benefit, up from 24% in 2016. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most common treatment covered, followed by fertility medications, genetic testing, non-IVF fertility treatments, counselor visits, and egg harvesting or freezing. Smaller employers are less likely to cover fertility treatments than big corporations- IFEBP found that only 10% of employers with 50 or fewer employers offered fertility benefits- but this still reflects an uptick from 4% in 2016.As t ime goes on and companies across spaces fight to attract and retain talent, more and more employers are adding or expanding their family building coverage, says Selena Yang, Director of Communications at Progyny, a fertility benefits provider.2. What Types of Fertility Benefits Might Be Available to Me?The umbrella of fertility benefits may encompass anything from infertility diagnosis and medication scaling up to intrauterine insemination (IUI) and IVF. mora expansive plans might include egg freezing, donor eggs or embryos, and/or gestational surrogacy. A traditional coverage plan will typically cover diagnostic testing and maybe a round of IUI or part of a round of IVF, Yang says, but this is really dependent on the employers coverage plan. In a growing number of cases, employers are also turning to third-party insurance providers- including not only Progyny but also Maven, Carrot, and others- that focus on providing supplemental policies to fill in gaps in traditional health plan s.3. Are There Laws Mandating Fertility Coverage?Sixteen states have infertility insurance coverage laws in place. However, they range widely in what exactly they stipulate. For example, Massachusetts, which has one of the most generous laws, mandates that insurance companies cover infertility diagnosis and treatment. On the flip side, Hawaii only requires insurance plans to cover one cycle of IVF and you have to be trying to conceive for five years prior. Other state laws focus on the schriftart of plan (case in point Arkansas exempts HMOs from their mandate). Its all over the place, says Barbara Collura, CEO of RESOLVE. Having said that, we know that because of state laws, a lot of people have been able to build families. Collura estimates that over the past 30 years around 95,000 babies were born in Massachusetts thanks to its infertility insurance laws.4. What Are the Limitations of Fertility Benefits? With state policies so few and far between, you may feel as though youve struc k gold if you see the word fertility in your employers summary of coverage. But be sure to read the fine print before rejoicing. Chances are that you wont have no-holds-barred access to treatments.Victoria Nio- a senior sales leader who blogs about infertility and founded an infertility support group- recalls her dismay when she learned that the fertility benefit in her own insurance plan only covered her diagnosis. I guess my policy probably said diagnosis in there somewhere, but I just saw infertility coverage, and I got stoked, she says. But then the doctors billing office told her she wasnt covered for anything beyond the infertility diagnosis shed already received. Even if your insurance covers more than just your diagnosis, there are other limitations to be aware of. In many plans certain procedures, like IVF, wont be authorized until less invasive treatments, such as fertility medications or IUIs, are implemented first, Yang explains. And most coverage maxes out at a certain dollar amount. One of the biggest problems with this type of coverage is most patients will exhaust their dollar maximums- and waste time- on treatment that isnt as effective, Yang says. By the time IVF is even in play, they most likely wouldve maxed out on their coverage and be forced to pay for the IVF cycle out of pocket. Same-sex couples and single parents by choice may be hit especially hard by some of these limitations. Technically, if a company is going to offer fertility benefits, they will be offered to all employees regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, says Amanda Hopping-Winn, chief program officer at the Family Equality Council. It gets tricky, though, because, in the majority of cases, in order to qualify for these benefits, you must have a diagnosis of infertility, she adds. The majority of LGBTQ people seeking to access these benefits are not actually infertile, they just arent in a situation where they can achieve pregnancy via sex. This might mean th ey must fork over money for 12 IUIs in order to prove infertility before a benefit kicks in. And then there are additional hurdles for these communities- like the fact that insurance doesnt typically cover purchasing sperm. For those whose bodies do not produce sperm, purchasing the vials for an unknown donor adds up quickly with an average price tag of $1,000 per 0.5 cc vial, Hopping-Winn says. Plus, only a handful of policies cover surrogacy, and fertility preservation for the trans community (such as egg or sperm freezing) is an expensive procedure thats not often covered, leaving them with minimal options for a biological child. But the outlook for equal benefits isnt totally gloomy. Stich says she has seen signs that companies are beginning to eliminate these barriers to coverage with better insurance plans and other solutions. In our survey work, we are seeing a greater trend toward more inclusive benefits across the board, she says. With this tight labor market, employers are looking for ways to distinguish themselves to attract top talent, she adds. Many employers are at least having the discussion about being inclusive with their benefits, recognizing that how an individual defines family is personal. 5. How Can I Advocate for (Better) Fertility Benefits? At first glance, the lack of widespread coverage and laundry list of limitations may be disheartening, but all hope is not lost. RESOLVE has found that personal advocacy has been an effective way to convince your company to cover fertility treatments. When I talk to legislators, they want the personal story, and when I talk to HR folks, they say they saatkorn thing, Collura says. Dont discount the power of your voice as an employee, and as somebody who decision-makers want to please. Collura recalls an instance where thanks to one woman who advocated for fertility coverage, the entire University of Michigan educational system adopted fertility benefits. She says this same women went on to work at a Fo rtune 500 chemical company where she was able to successfully advocate for benefits again. Im not kidding. It just takes one person, Collura says.Risa Kerslake, a freelance writer and infertility blogger, was also able to secure fertility benefits after her husband appealed to his companys HR department. He shared with them some particular struggles that they were going through, using a specific example of a claim related to their embryo transfer that was denied. I couldnt believe when he told me that they were going to offer some fertility coverage. I mean, thats huge, Kerslake says. Though their embryo transfer and other aspects of treatment still werent covered- which meant they were on the hook for several thousands of dollars paid out of pocket- they were able to get help for fertility medications and things related to diagnosis, like testing, ultrasounds, and clinic visits. What we could take advantage of really helped us so much, she says, and at the very least, it got the co nversation started. For help getting the conversation started at your own organization, check out Resolves sample insurance coverage request letter.Collura also points to the third-party insurance providers stepping in to help companies supplement their existing insurance policies with fertility benefits. If you have insufficient coverage, you could suggest these options to your employer or reach out to a third-party provider directly (many have contact forms for employees) for help starting a conversation about this option at your workplace.Hopping-Winn says that shes seen similar success within the LGBTQ community. Since insurance companies tend to be massive and bureaucratic with state-specific policies and protocols, we have found that the LGBTQ+ community tends to have better luck advocating for benefits directly with their employers, she says. Employers are beginning to realize that LGBTQ+-friendly benefits packageswill be a huge draw in recruiting and retaining a competitive workforce.6. What Are My Options if I Dont Have Any or Enough Fertility Benefits?Without coverage, fertility treatments can set you back tens of thousands of dollars. Nio says she and her husband easily spent six figures on treatments. To do so, they borrowed from their mortgage and 401(k) accounts and maxed out credit cards. A woman in her infertility support group quit a high-paying job to work as a barista at Starbucks because of their generous IVF coverage, which extends to part-time employees. Aside from digging deep into your own pockets, you can speak with your medical practice about whether they offer any financing options. There are also organizations, such as the Baby Quest Foundation and the Hope for Fertility Foundation, that offer grants for fertility treatment. If youre using a specialty pharmacy for medication, speak with them about discounts, Collura suggests.7. What Questions Should I Ask About Fertility Benefits?Whether youre exploring new opportunities or just wan t to figure out what your current employer offers, you can ask questions to help you understand the extent of fertility benefits available to you.Ask about which specific treatments or aspects of diagnosis your benefit will cover- such as IUI, IVF, egg freezing, surrogacy, adoption reimbursement, genetic testing, or medications. When interviewing for a potential job and inquiring about fertility benefits, ask if all the above are covered, if there are any pre-authorizations, if there are dollar maximums or clinic restrictions, and how employees can learn more/take advantage of said benefit, Yang says.Of course, you may want to wait until you have an offer before peppering someone with questions about fertility benefits, since bias against parents and mothers in particular still exists. Since prospective employers are not supposed to ask applicants about their family-building plans, it is probably not in the applicants best interest to raise this issue during an interview, Collura sa ys.Once youve received an offer and are reviewing your overall benefits package- or if youre exploring your options at your current company- you can ask your HR team questions about fertility benefits, such as Is evaluation by a specialist covered? What fertility treatments are covered? Is genetic testing included? Are there limitations on the coverage? Are there requirements before moving onto IVF? You can get specific hereWhat are the requirements before moving onto IVF?Are there dollar caps or cycle caps? Are there age restrictions? Are there marital status restrictions? What are the annual or lifetime maximums? What is the length of time on the existing policy? Are co-pays, co-insurance, or deductibles consistent with those for other health benefits? Are medication costs included in any annual or lifetime maximums, or are they carved out separately?Going through fertility treatments can be a physically, emotionally, and financially draining experience. Youre not just grieving a loss or grieving your genetics, but youre hurting your financial state, Nio says. I always wondered if we had coverage if I would have been as depressed or stressed. I dont think so. I think Id have more hope. But keep in mind that your words can be a powerful tool when it comes to securing benefits at work. Raise your voice. Its scary, but this is how change happens, Collura says. We need to raise our voices to change the status quo.

Buzzwords Please stop saying these ridiculous buzzwords at work

Buzzwords Please stop saying ansicht ridiculous buzzwords at workBuzzwords Please stop saying these ridiculous buzzwords at workAt first, euphemisms surfaced in the workplace to help people deal with touchy subjects that were difficult to talk about. Before long, they morphed into corporate buzzwords that expanded and took over our vocabulary until our everyday conversations started sounding like theyre taking place on another planet.Listen Ray, I dont have the bandwidth for it with everything thats on my plate, but ping me anyway because at the end of the day its on my radar and I dont want to be thrown under the bus because I didnt circle back around on this no-brainer.I understand the temptation. These phrases are spicy and they make you feel clever (low hanging fruitis a crutch of mine). But they also annoy the hell out of people. If you think that you can use these phrases without consequence, youre kidding yourself. Just pay close attention to how other people react to your using them, and youll see that these phrases dont cast you in a favorable light. After all, TalentSmart has tested the emotional intelligence of more than a million people and one of the biggest need areas for most people is social awareness. Most of us are so focused on what were saying and what were going to say next that we lose sight of how our words affect other people. So give this list a read, think of how often you use some of these words, and see if you can catch yourself before you use them again.Have some fun with it, because at the end of the day if you dont hit the ground running you can always go back to the drawing hauptplatine and get the ball rollingAt the end of the dayBack to the drawing boardHit the ground runningGet the ball rollingLow hanging fruitThrown under the busThink outside the boxLets touch baseGet my managers blessingIts on my radarPing meI dont have the bandwidthNo brainerPar for the courseBang for your buckSynergyMove the goal postApples to applesWin-winCir cle back aroundAll hands on deckTake this offlineDrill-downElephant in the roomOn my plateWhat phrases are your pet peeves?Travis Bradberry is the co-author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and the co-founder of TalentSmart. This article originally appeared on LinkedIn.

When was the last time you read an article on your industry, or attended a webinar or conference to strengthen your skill set? Volunteer to help out with a project on another team or seek additional responsibilities from your manager. The goal is to challenge yourself again so your skills can shine.Your brand is damaged goodsWhether it’s an emotional outburst in the office or a drunken mishap at a company event, a workplace blunder can do some serious damage to your personal brand, and sabotage your potential advancement at the organization. To get your brand back on track, make any necessary apologies and move on. It goes without saying that your new goal is to be a model employee at the company. Also, look for ways to add value to the organization outside of your day-to-day activities. For instance, you could volunteer to manage the company’s co-ed sports team or head up the next fundraiser for charity. You’re a cultural misfitYou can have the best skill set in the world but if you don’t get along with the team, you won’t be successful in the organization. It’s not a coincidence that recruiters and hiring managers spend the majority of the time in an interview determining cultural fit. Consider your core values and your ideal working environment, including communication style, leadership style, and so forth. If you and your current company don’t see eye-to-eye on these topics, then it might be time to make a move to a team that does. You haven’t spoken upRemember, managers aren’t mind readers. If your career is stalling, speak up and let your goals be known. Sit down with your manager in a private meeting to discuss your goals and concerns. Reiterate your interest in working and succeeding within the organization before addressing your concern. Together, you may be able to develop a growth plan or take the next steps to repair any damage or fill in any skill gaps that are holding you back. You don’t know the right peopleNetworking is an important aspect of every professional’s career advancement, whether they’re looking for that next promotion or wanting to change careers. If you want to advance your career, you need to meet the right people. Also, join industry-specific professional associations to meet people outside your organization so your network continues to grow.If you’re unhappy with your current career path, now’s the time to take action. Use the tips above to get your career back on track.

4 Ways to Stay Sane in a Toxic Office

4 Ways to Stay Sane in a Toxic Office 4 Ways to Stay Sane in a Toxic Office Work, like life, is bound to have its ups and downs. Whether it’s a new manager who thinks hovering behind your chair is productive, a round of lay-offs that wipes out half your work friends, or yet another spate of cost-cutting austerity measures- the atmosphere in your office can sometimes quickly go from manageable to miserable.Naturally, when faced with a hostile environment, your first thoughts probably lean toward finding ways out of the situation. However, leaving your job isn’t always an option- at least not right away. So, until things improve or you’re able to plot your exit strategy, you’ll still need to show up every day and deal with whatever tension ails your office.Although dealing with a toxic work environment is anything but fun, you don’t have to be at the mercy of your surroundings. Here are a few steps you can take to get a handle on the situation and get through it relatively unscathed.1. Establish Your Support GroupBuilding a support group outside of t he office is always a good thing, but it’s especially important when you find yourself swimming in toxic waters. When tensions at work are high, you may not want to or be able to vent to your colleagues. Plus, there are some things you just shouldn’t discuss with them, as constantly airing your frustrations could easily be misinterpreted if overheard by the wrong person. So save your curse-laden tirades for you trusted friends and family, and keep them to after hours. Just remember not to overdo it- you don’t want them to end up as frustrated as you are.2. Find a Friggin' OutletI can’t stress this enough. When things at work get tough, find something to do after work- every single day. The first time I encountered an awful 9-to-5 environment, the biggest mistake I made was to wearily drag myself home every day, pour myself a glass of wine, and re-hash the day’s events over and over in my head, dwelling on how miserable my life had become.Fortunately, by the time this happen ed for the second time in my career, I had learned my lesson. I was already a member at my local gym, so I added weekly classes to my routine and attended religiously. When I wasn’t in the gym, I was working on little home improvement projects around my house, and when I ran out of those, I taught myself how to knit. Don’t laugh! Knitting was seriously one of the best hobbies I could’ve picked up. It required constant concentration, so I could never allow my mind to wander (or wallow), and it’s surprisingly soothing. The key is to make sure you’re living a fulfilling life outside your job- it’ll make the drama you endure after punching in far more tolerable.3. Stay Positive- Even if You Have to Fake ItThis might be the most difficult step in the process, but it’s also one of the most important. Have you ever hung around someone who’s constantly negative, and then found yourself becoming a bit pessimistic, too? The same can happen when you’re positive. And even if ke eping your chin up doesn’t rub off on your colleagues, it will definitely help keep you from falling into the trap of never-ending negativity in the office. That said, be sure not to overdo it, as an overly joyful attitude may seem inappropriate to your colleagues in the office- especially others who’ve found their situations as difficult as your own. You don’t need to be the company for their misery, but you also don’t need to go out of your way to act like nothing is wrong. Focus on your work, treat people with respect, and be as polite and genuine as you would in any normal, healthy office.4. Make Lists- Every DayHaving a great attitude (or at least pretending to) is great for the big picture, but when it came down to the minutes and hours of each day- that could drag on tortuously- I found I needed a more hands-on approach. Those of you who like to make lists will love this, and to those who don’t, trust me. It will make such a difference that you’ll start making lists for everything- even when you’re not at work.Several years ago, when dealing with a particularly painful situation in my office, I noticed I had become quite distracted. I would forget important meetings, or write an email but never get around to sending it. Because my job seemed to no longer have real purpose, my days dragged on and I never felt I like was working toward anything. And then I started making lists. I wrote down every little thing I needed to do that day, all the way down to the most insignificant details, like washing out my coffee mug before leaving each night. The results were incredible. Suddenly, I had things I “needed” to do. If I had a list, I had a purpose, and no matter how awful the situation was, I had a nice long list of tasks to keep me busy every day- and keep me from staring blankly at my screen.A toxic office is a challenge I hope none of you will ever have to face. But, if you do, remember these tips to help ease your journey through the choppy waters- and you’ll be better equipped for success once the storm passes, too.Photo courtesy of Ed Yourdon.

After all, if you don’t stand up for yourself on the job, no one else will.Show your coworkers that yes, you’re a team player, but you’re also not going to let anyone pressure you into doing their work for them, or have them show you that your contributions don’t matter.Don’t let people- or meetings- use up every second of your timeSome coworkers will talk, talk, talk your ear off at work, every chance they get- this will never change. But you can adjust how you react. When they ask questions prying into your personal life, keep in mind that your life is your business only- make it clear that you won’t be sharing anymore information about the topic. The same goes for meetings. They can really pile up, so it’s important to take control of your schedule by taking a few hours for your assignments, saying no to meetings and trying to have all meetings fall on the same day.Ask for the money you wantWhether you actually get a raise is another story, but if you don’t ask for more money, you probably won’t get it.Using humor, saying a number aloud and knowing that you don’t have to stay if your employer won’t give you a raise are key things to remember during a negotiation. The first step is scheduling time to talk with your supervisor.Still need more inspiration? Let Ellevest’s Sallie Krawcheck  shine a light on some methods you might not have thought of yet.Don’t let tricky cowor kers ruin your dayWith  know-it-alls, cyperompetitive coworkers and more, someone is always  going to annoy you, no matter what. But you have control over how you respond to them.Doing things like switching your surroundings, seeing a silver lining in the person irritating you and trying to stay professional  when someone pushes your buttons can go a long way.Staying in control at work is all about recognizing the value of your contributions and experience, and respecting yourself enough to protect them all costs- while still being someone others enjoy working with.

Claims versus Evidence Knowing When Youre Really Qualified for the Job!

Claims versus Evidence Knowing When You’re Really Qualified for the Job! Claims versus Evidence Knowing When You’re Really Qualified for the Job! It’s not a matter of whether or not you can do the job, but it’s a matter of knowing if you’re the right person for the job.  As a recruiter and career coach, I have worked with and have placed professionals at all levels. In many cases, candidates will usually tell me the same thing. They’ll say something like, “I can really do that job!,” or “This job is right up my alley!” Sound familiar? It’s not until we “deep-dive” into their background that they finally concede that they may not be the best candidate. It’s not a matter of whether or not they can do the job, but it’s a matter of finding the right person to do the job. Additionally, it’s about making sure that we migrate the candidate and their background from being “Claims Based” to “Evidence Based” and capable of fulfilling the responsibilities of the position. If you’ve read my article entitled, ” Roadmap to a Winning Resume,” then you know that having a quantifiable resume is critical to capturing the attention of the hiring manager or recruiter. Making sure that your resume contains the data necessary to demonstrate your skills is fine, but taking a few minutes to develop an “Evidence-Based Qualifications Summary” will prove invaluable as an addendum to supplement your resume when you interview for the position.Your resume needs to be crafted in a way that increases your visibility for the position. The Evidence-Based Qualifications Summary is a tool that few people will use when going in for an interview, but it will set you apart! When developing your Evidence-Based Qualifications Summary, you will use the job description that has been published for the position as your guide. Upon reviewing the job description, I suggest that you copy and paste the “Qualifications” for the position and, using an outline format, identify the “Years of Experience” and the “Accomplishments” to go along with each point. I would suggest that you limit the accomplish ments piece of this exercise to three bullets per qualification, whenever possible. As an example, here is a qualification requirement along with the candidate’s (evidence-based qualification summary) response for a Human Resources Administration / Generalist position: (Requirement) Two years of administrative experience in a human resources office Years Experience: 5 Accomplishments: Provided responsible, confidential administrative duties in support of the Human Resources Director, the Risk Manager and Department Managers. Administered the performance evaluation system for professional, union and non-union employees. Conducted pre-employment background investigation, exits interview, classification program maintenance, salary and benefits administration plan. Obviously, this is for one bullet in the list of requirements, but you can clearly see that this candidate has more experience than they are seeking, and is able to identify his or her specific accomplishments. In many cases, a position description may be written as a “professional wish-list” of the skills that the company is looking for in a perfect candidate to fulfill a particular role. Developing an evidence-based qualifications summary allows the hiring authority or recruiter to zone in directly to the hot points in the job description that may be the most important to them and their team.Don’t worry if you’re not a direct hit on every “Requirement” or “Qualification.” I have seen instances in which the hiring company will make exceptions for someone who may be lacking in one area, but is able to demonstrate advanced skills in another area.Using this document as an interview tool also eliminates the need for you to defend your resume or any piece of your backgroun d. It allows you to control the interview in a conversational way, rather than being reactive and asked to “prove” your claims. The next time you come across an opportunity to apply for a position, it’s important to begin thinking about how you will develop an “Evidence-Based Qualifications Summary” to identify your background, your accomplishments and your success!Go get’em!

Performance reviews arent just once a year anymore

Performance reviews aren't just once a year anymore Performance reviews aren't just once a year anymore The dreaded, looming, once-a-year performance review is becoming a thing of the past. Now performance reviews are an everyday thing. An article  in The  Wall Street Journal calls it: “The Never-Ending Performance Review.” Businesses, it seems, are shaking up the evaluation process by checking in more - at different times and by  using technology. As people’s responsibilities shift at work, the way managers  provide  feedback is also changing.Evaluating employees  non-traditionallyAt some companies, people feel that the way workers are assessed isn’t quite on-target.  NPR reported in 2016 that according to corporate research and advisory firm  CEB, 83% of HR managers reportedly think the employee evaluation systems need an overhaul, compared to 4% who think the method is effective at measuring performance. So it’s no surprise that the practice is evolving. The Wall Street Journal article profiles a host of businesses approaching this differently, including software company Revi nate Inc. Rani Croshal, a manager at the company,  used to formally review her employees’ performance once a year, but now the number of yearly “smaller-scale assessments”  in the dozens.“That includes quarterly discussions about goals, semiannual evaluations in which managers, peers and direct reports give feedback, and multiple check-ins to ensure her nine employees are hitting long-term goals. And then there’s the annual compensation review process,”  the article says.Although some companies are doing this more frequently, it seems like they don’t all  necessarily have to do as many check-ins  to shake things up.Nancy Harris, Founder and CEO at Restart Consulting, told Fast Company about other methods businesses are adopting. “Some companies now use multi-rater feedback, which considers the input of managers, peers and clients…Other systems, like the one now used at United Airlines, decoupled performance ratings from compensation - the necessity to rate people in order to give a raise or bonus no longer exists,” Harris told Fast Company.Incorporating technologyWeight management company Retrofit is an example of how the employee evaluation process  continues to evolve.Catalina Andrade, employee happiness director at the company, told the Chicago Tribune in 2016 that traditional performance reviews  Ã¢€œare old-fashioned and unrealistic.” Instead, she was  reportedly switching Retrofit from reviews twice per year to the TINYpulse Perform app.The Chicago Tribune article outlined how it  works: “Employees define their goals on the app with their managers, and when it is time to rate how they did, they swipe right if they met expectations, up if they exceeded and down if they fell short. There is a section to enter brief comments and the option to drop in emails they’ve received praising their work. A dashboard helps employees and their managers track trends,” the article said. But technology hasn’t completely taken over just yet -  bosses should still have to come face-to-face with the people  they manage.Retrofit managers reportedly have “weekly one-on-one meetings” with their employees, and the company is coaxing them to bring up performance twice every month during those discussions. Why companies are nixing  the standard approachThere are reasons why some companies are doing away with more traditional, formal, and infrequent employee evaluation processes.A 2016 Harvard Business Review article states that in 2011, “Kelly Services was the first big professional services firm to drop appraisals,”  and outlines three “business reasons” why some companies are leaving them in the dust. The first is the “the return of people development,” the idea that some firms are putting more of an emphasis on employee development, at times leaving workers in charge of their own growth, even though managers should give informal responses often. The second is “the need for agility,” the idea that since busine sses don’t necessarily want employees to repeat the same tasks, there’s no need to use an evaluation format “that’s built mainly to assess and hold people accountable for past or current practices.”The Harvard Business review’s third reason is “the centrality of teamwork,” which should be easier to maintain after “moving away from forced ranking and from appraisals’ focus on individual accountability.”Employees’ responsibilities at work are changing - the ways they are evaluated are, too.

5 Benefits of Working Barista Jobs After College

5 Benefits of Working Barista Jobs After College 5 Benefits of Working Barista Jobs After College For most college graduates, serving coffee is not an ideal use of their degree. Still, a barista job is much better than being unemployed, and it comes with a surprising set of perks. It’s a good temporary job for young and independent individuals who are transitioning from academia to the professional arena. Here are 5 reasons why you should consider becoming a barista, while you search for more substantial employment:     Hirable Anywhere Coffee is the second largest commodity in the world, making it a stable industry with continuous job opportunities. Many of us live in a city full of Starbucks so it’s no surprise that selling caffeinated drinks is a big business. Here in the U.S., “third wave”, or specialty coffee shops, are expanding throughout the country. Therefore, whether you get hired and trained as a corporate barista or an artisanal one, you’ll be able to find a job almost wherever you move. Brewing a tasty cup and designing fancy latte art are actually valuable and impressive skills to have, since we live in a major coffee drinking culture.   Transferable Experiences Professional baristas are in high demand these days and it can be a competitive industry, too. However, if you’re not interested in having a career in the coffee world, you’ll still be able to use your entry-level café position as a means to build up your resume; working in food retail will give you sales and customer service experience. As a barista, you’ll have the opportunity to improve your communication and social skills, as well as become a more understanding and levelheaded employee. Your temper may be tested when you’re serving demanding clients or working alongside unamiable coworkers, but you can use those circumstances to develop your patience and empathy for others. Hiring managers like applicants who are capable of dealing with various types of people, and in stressful situations, without losing their calm. They also prefer hiring employees who are either currently employed or lack noticeable gaps in their employment history. You’re almost always a more favorable applicant if you’re working than if you’re not. Decent Hourly Wages   It’s not just better than being out of work; it’s also possible to earn decent money as a full-time barista. Many specialty coffee shops pay decent hourly wages. Of course, servers and bartenders have the potential to earn great tips during busy hours, but baristas get the better paychecks. After I finished grad school, I spent an entire year making $11/hour plus tips while working as a barista in Brooklyn, New York. I was forced to get a little frugal, defer my student loans, and occasionally depend on my credit card, but I did manage to pay the rest of my bills, while sharing a two-bedroom apartment with a roommate. However, I was very lucky not to have any major expenses or dependents relying on me financially. While the battle for a living wage continues, it’s important to recognize that, even with a relatively well-paying café job, food service is difficult permanent career (unless you’re a successful chef or restaurateur). If you can afford to take on a barista job, stay realistic but also positive by reminding yourself that it’s temporary and preferable to a lot of other starter jobs. Flexible Schedule   For me, the best part about being a barista was having a more accommodating schedule than a typical  administrative job. While many café managers will ask for an open availability in the beginning, it’s possible to carve out your own personal part-time or full-time workweek after a few months. You may have to work early mornings and some weekends, but it’s not difficult to request off days for vacation time or switch shifts with coworkers. If you’re able to create a schedule that caters to your life outside of the coffee shop, you’ll have time to dedicate to your creative projects or take on an internship, while continuing to search for other work. Free Coffee     As you take the time to find your ideal profession, or consider your next major life step after college, you may as well work in a place where you get complimentary coffee! Not only will you get to drink it for free, but a majority of cafés also let their employees take home free beans. Coffee’s shelf life is arguable, but many specialty coffee shops will pull their retail bags off the shelves after a few weeks, in order to consistently offer fresh roasted beans. Since a pound of coffee can average anywhere from $10-20, depending on the brand, getting bags for free is a sweet perk. I definitely miss bringing home free Stumptown Coffee every month.   Being a barista has the potential to be a fun way to support yourself after college, as long as you don’t have major expenses and remember that it’s just temporary. You’ll get the most out of your café position if you view it as a transitional phase in your life, where you can gain some useful professional experiences, before you find work that’s more suitable for you Javaher Nooryani is a writer and editor based in Denver, CO. This is the best way to relax at the end of a seriously long day This is the best way to relax at the end of a seriously long day Have you ever had the kind of day where work never seems to end, a million different tasks land on your plate all at once and you feel so overwhelmed that you’re legitimately dizzy by the time you get home and collapse on your couch? Yeah, us, too.Being pushed to your absolute limits can be helpful for your resilience and self-confidence down the line, but in that moment, it just makes you feel like one giant ball of anxiety rolling down a huge hill that’s engulfed in flames.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! And that’s not even the worst part. It’s one thing to deal with heart-palpitating stress all day and another to hold onto it once you’re home and trying your hardest to relax.Winding down after a day from hell can be a pretty complicated task, and most of us end up unsuccessful, struggling to fall asleep or tossing and turning all night once we do.If this sounds like you, it’s time to explore the magic that is journaling before bed. But we don’t mean a “Dear Diary” kind of entry or a stream-of-consciousness rant about how horrible and difficult your life is right now. There’s a particular style that can help you transform that frenetic energy into a grounded sense of gratitude, clear that mental chatter and help you breathe easy again.Grab your favorite color pen, turn to a blank page and  start listing off all of the good things that happened to you  today. It can be as big as “My major presentation went flawlessly” or as small as “I made it to work five minutes before my boss walked in the door.” Anything that could be considered a success, jot it down.Replay your morning routine, your commute to work, the tasks you powered through like a boss (even if you were stressed AF), your phone call with your mom before leaving the office, the 10-minute walk home to your apartment that served as your bout of exercise for the day,  all  of it.Now, look down at that page. Notice how many things there are to be pleased with yourself about, to be thankful for as another day of your life comes to a close. That visual is mighty powerful in helping you reframe how you’re feeling about what you just went through. And, by listing all of the good, the bad seems to seep out of your pores and away from your personal space, leaving you  capable of (finally) taking a deep breath of satisfaction and relaxing.  Phew.  Add a cup of herbal tea to the mix, and you’ll be good as new in a matter of minutes. This article first appeared on Swirled.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
